On March 17, 2023, former President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev addressed the country’s population with a demand for frugality during a meeting with journalists. In his statement, he called on citizens to give up food, clothing, and housing in order to reduce personal expenses. Additionally, Medvedev acknowledged that one of the main reasons for Russia’s financial difficulties was the country’s involvement in the military conflict and support for military actions.
“We are living in very challenging times. Each of us must contribute to the preservation of the economic stability. Basically our country in the conflict with NATO, which has sided with Ukraine,” Medvedev said at the press conference. “I urge all citizens of Russia to refrain from excess and unnecessary spending. If you still have some money, then instead of buying food, you can just drink water. If you have nowhere to live — you can live in the open air.”
Ex-president noted that war is expensive and all money should go to supporting the army and national security. He also stated that the new wave of mobilization will primarily affect those men who will not cut off expenses. Dmitry Medvedev said that the army will provide these men with comfort in terms of accommodation, food, and clothing. He added, “…and these citizens will live comfortably, but not for long.”
“We must understand that war is costing us dearly,” Medvedev said. “The money we spend on military expenses could be spent on other important goals. But education, healthcare, and the development of infrastructure and social programs is not our priority. A military victory cannot be a cheap pleasure, and the bottomless pockets of the arbiters of the destinies of ordinary people must be constantly replenished with money.”
During the Q&A session, the former president refused to comment on whether he would set an example for Russian men to follow and vacate his mansion.
At the same time, when journalists asked how many more men would have to die and how much longer the conflict would last, Dmitry Medvedev replied, “More will be born. Men in Russia are not mammoths — they won’t go extinct.”
